Rerouting a dryer vent in San Antonio homes

Two-story homes built in the 1990s and newer gave us a common problem. The laundry sits upstairs. The duct climbs into the attic and crosses to a roof jack. That path runs well over the 25-foot equivalent limit once you count elbows. Every 90-degree turn counts heavily against you. Rerouting means finding a shorter, straighter exit instead of adding a booster fan.

The usual fix is a gable-end or sidewall termination. We look for the nearest exterior wall with clear framing between it and the dryer. Rigid metal pipe replaces foil flex. Joints get foil tape and face downstream, never screws into the airstream. Disconnected joints in attics dump lint onto insulation, and that is often why a reroute gets called in.

Postwar ranches are different. A short exterior-wall run already exists, 4 to 8 feet. The reroute there is usually about moving the laundry, or getting the dryer out of a crushed utility closet corner.

Not every job should be rerouted. Townhome and condo stacks often use a shared chase. That duct belongs to the building, not you, and the HOA has to approve any new penetration. Masonry walls and tile roofs also change what is reasonable.
