Dryer Vent Cleaning FAQ — San Antonio, TX

Common questions from homeowners in San Antonio and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.

How often does a dryer vent in San Antonio actually need to be cleared?

Once a year covers most households. Bump that to every six to eight months if you run four or more loads a week, dry pet bedding, or have a long duct run with elbows in it. Our cooling season stretches roughly March through October, so the dryer fights a hot laundry room for most of the year, and lint packs tighter when the air inside the duct is humid. Homes north of 1604 with second-floor laundry rooms and roof terminations tend to need attention sooner than a single-story ranch with a short side-wall vent.

What are the warning signs of a clogged vent?

The usual first clue is towels and jeans needing a second cycle. After that: the dryer cabinet is hot to the touch when the load finishes, the laundry room smells scorched, or lint shows up around the door seal. Go outside while the dryer runs and put your hand near the vent hood. Weak airflow, or a flap that barely lifts, means the blockage is in the duct and not in the machine.

Can you describe the visit step by step?

We start at the exterior hood to see where the duct ends and how it terminates. Then we pull the dryer out, disconnect the transition hose, and check the connection behind it, which is where crushed foil duct usually hides. A rotating brush on a flexible rod runs the full length of the duct while a vacuum sits at one end to catch what comes loose. We reconnect everything, clamp the transition properly, run the dryer, and confirm the flap at the hood opens the way it should.

How long will the appointment take?

Plan on about an hour for a straight side-wall run on a single-story home. Two-story houses with a roof termination, or runs with several turns, take closer to ninety minutes because we have to work the brush from both ends. If we find a nest, a collapsed section, or duct tape failing behind the wall, the visit runs longer and we tell you before we keep going. We clear a path to the dryer ourselves; you do not need to move anything heavy.

What makes one dryer vent job cost more than another?

Length and shape of the run drive most of it. A short straight shot through an exterior wall in a 1960s brick ranch inside Loop 410 is quick work. A thirty-foot run from an interior laundry room up through a two-story subdivision home north of 1604, ending at a roof cap, means roof access and more time on the brush. Nest removal, replacing crushed flex duct, and installing a new hood with a working damper are separate items we price on site after we see them. The estimate is free and nothing starts until you approve the number.

How do I know the duct is the problem and not the machine?

Run the dryer on air-fluff with no heat and feel the exterior hood. Strong steady air means the duct is open and the trouble is the heating element, thermal fuse, or thermostat. Weak air or none at all points at the duct. Another tell: a dryer that shuts off early or trips its thermal fuse repeatedly is usually overheating because exhaust has nowhere to go. We check airflow before and after cleaning. If the numbers do not improve we say so and point you to an appliance tech instead of selling you more work.

Does it matter whether my duct is rigid metal or flexible?

It matters a lot. Rigid smooth-wall metal has slick interior walls, so lint moves through instead of catching. Flexible foil and vinyl have ridges that grab lint at every bend, and they crush easily when a dryer gets shoved back against the wall. We see a lot of plastic and foil duct in older bungalows near downtown where laundry got added into a closet years after the house was built. Where we can reach it, we recommend rigid metal for the concealed run and a short semi-rigid piece only for the transition behind the dryer.

What happens if there's a bird or rodent nest inside the vent?

It is common here, especially on hoods with a missing or broken flap. Birds build in spring, and rodents move into warm ducts during the handful of freezes we get each winter. We remove the nest material from the exterior end, clear the remaining duct, and clean out the droppings and debris that came with it. Then we install a hood with a proper damper or a guard that keeps animals out without choking airflow, since a fine mesh screen just becomes a lint trap of its own.

My duct run is very long. Can it be shortened or helped along?

Sometimes. On slab-on-grade subdivision homes the run is often fixed inside framing, but we can occasionally find a shorter path to an exterior wall or a different roof point. Every elbow adds resistance equal to several feet of straight pipe, so removing two unnecessary turns can do more than shortening the run. Where rerouting is not practical, an inline booster fan wired to the dryer is an option, though it needs to be installed so it can be cleaned later. We will tell you honestly if the run is fine as-is and just needed clearing.

Do you have openings today, and how far out do you travel?

Same-day slots are usually available, and mornings book first. We work across San Antonio and Bexar County: downtown bungalows and shotgun cottages, the 1950s to 1970s brick ranches inside and just outside Loop 410, and the newer slab-on-grade neighborhoods north of 1604 and west toward the Medina County line. That stretch sits at the edge of the Edwards Plateau, with Hill Country limestone and caliche north and west and flat blackland clay prairie south and east, so the limestone road dust that works into vent hoods is something we deal with year-round. Call and tell us your cross streets and we will give you a window.
