Installing a dryer vent that actually fits the house

Most bad installs here start with the floor plan. Builders put laundry closets upstairs in 1990s-and-newer two-story homes. The duct then climbs to a roof jack. That run blows past the 25-foot equivalent limit once you count elbows. No booster fan was ever planned for. So the install has to solve a routing problem, not just punch a hole.

We decide termination first. Short exterior-wall runs in postwar ranches and garage laundry corners get a wall hood with a free-swinging damper. Mid-length first-floor runs usually end at a soffit or gable end. Roof jacks are last resort. Birds and wasps prop those flappers open. Screened covers pack solid with lint and cedar pollen, so we don't install screens.

Material matters more than length. Rigid galvanized pipe inside walls and attics. Joints taped and clamped, never screwed through. Screws catch lint. Foil flex only behind the dryer, kept short so it won't crush in a tight utility closet.

Townhome and condo stacks are different work. Shared or chase-routed ducts mean you inherit someone else's run. We check what the chase already holds before quoting anything.
